Why are dental exams essential?
Dental exams and cleanings are essential, much like car maintenance is crucial for keeping a vehicle in good condition. Our mouths have many things going on that patients are typically unaware of. During a dental exam, a dentist can identify minor issues before they become significant problems. Cleanings are equally important because food, bacteria, and saliva can form plaque around teeth and gums, leading to decay or gum disease if not properly managed. At the dental office, a hygienist or dentist will clean your teeth and educate you on maintaining good oral hygiene.
What is included in a dental exam?
A dental exam includes checking your teeth, gums, and any pathological changes in your soft tissue. As a prosthodontist, I also check your bite, teeth alignment, and TMJ muscle condition.
What is a dentist normally looking for during a dental exam?
During a dental exam, a dentist looks for tooth decay, wear on tooth surfaces, gum recession, gum swelling, bleeding gums, and any pathological changes in soft tissues like the lips or tongue.
What types of recommendations might a dentist make?
After the exam, the doctor will provide recommendations based on the problems identified. These may include home care instructions such as proper brushing and flossing techniques. For seniors with gum recession, using an interproximal brush and waterpik may be recommended. If teeth wear is noted, a soft toothbrush and a night guard may be advised to protect teeth during sleep. For crowded or impacted teeth, an oral surgeon or orthodontist consultation might be suggested. Overall, recommendations aim to maintain and improve oral health.
How long does a full dental exam usually take?
A comprehensive dental exam typically lasts about one hour. In more severe or complicated cases, an additional hour may be necessary for complete information collection. Periodic exams for existing patients during cleaning visits usually take about 20 to 30 minutes.
Are dental exams painful?
Dental exams are not painful. Some sensitivity may occur when probing the gums to check gum health, but numbing gel is available to alleviate discomfort. It's important to communicate how you feel so we can ensure a painless exam experience.
